Turnout low in Va. primary election

NORFOLK, Va. - The race is on and time is running out. On Tuesday, voters will choose which democratic candidate will be in the running for Virginia's top spot come November.

Registrars across Virginia are seeing light voter turnout in Tuesday's primaries.

Election and party officials believe less than 5 percent of the state's 5 million registered voters will take part.

Voters are choosing Democratic nominees for governor and lieutenant governor, as well as nominees in a dozen House of Delegates races.

State Board of Elections Secretary Nancy Rodrigues says turnout appears to be very low. As of 8 a.m., some precincts hadn't even seen any voters. She also said the largest precinct in Faquier County with more than 4,400 voters had only had 14 votes cast.

The question for voters this Tuesday: Can you tell the difference between Brian Moran, State Senator Creigh Deeds and Terry McAuliffe?

"I will get that transportation deal done," said Moran.

"I'm the candidate who will get transportation solved next year," said Deeds.

"First thing, we're gonna get the third crossing done so we aren't stuck in traffic," said McAuliffe.

The candidates all promise bipartisanship and to create green jobs. With so many overlaps, WAVY.com pressed each on how he is different.

Moran says his platform makes him stand out. "My message is that I've had a strong record of standing up for Virginia families," said Moran.

Senator Deeds says he's the only candidate to ever run a statewide election. "I'm the best candidate who can best lead Virginia in the mold of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine," said Deeds.

Terry McAuliffe sees Deeds' loss to Bob McDonnell for Attorney General in 2005 as a weakness, and claims he's different.

"We need someone who can beat Bob McDonnell," said McAuliffe.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m on Tuesday.
