VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A Virginia Beach police officer arrested early Saturday morning on a driving under the influence charge will go on trial July 27, according to court documents obtained by WAVY.com. The case has been assigned to The Chesapeake Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney.
The court records show Officer Bryan Womble had a blood alcohol level of .15 when he was arrested. That is nearly twice the legal driving limit.
A police spokesperson says Officer Womble was involved in a two car crash at 2 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at 20th Street and Pacific Avenue at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. No one was hurt, but police arrested Womble for DUI. Records state Womble had a "strong alcohol odor" and "failed field tests" at the accident scene.
Womble is a member of the department's Selective Enforcement Team. Those officers mainly focus on getting drunk drivers off the streets.
Womble was the officer who arrested and charged NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith with DUI two months ago.
Womble bonded out of the Virginia Beach City Jail on a $500 personal recognizance bond, shortly after he was booked. He has been placed on administrative duties pending an internal investigation.
