NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jim Webb says a federal review of the Navy's plan to move a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier from Virginia to Florida should address issues related to fiscal responsibility and strategic necessity.
The review will be conducted by the Government Accountability Office. A report is to be given to Congress by February 2012.
Webb said Friday in a news release that he sent a letter Thursday to the GAO asking it to address a list of questions. They include whether the number of Navy ships justifies the addition of another nuclear-support facility.
All the Navy's East Coast nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are based at Naval Station Norfolk. The Navy has proposed moving a carrier to Mayport, Fla., for national security reasons.
