NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - USS Forrest Sherman ( DDG 98) of Destroyer Squadron 28 left Naval Station Norfolk July 3 for the Mediterranean and Arabian Seas.
There, the ship, commanded by Cmdr. Luis E. Sanchez, will be conducting counter-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa and will also be patrolling the Arabian Sea.
"The ship worked hard to get ready for deployment; we did really well on all the certifications. Forrest Sherman is ready in all respects to carry on the nation's tasking," said Sanchez.
Melissa Prater was out at Naval Station Norfolk to say goodbye her boyfriend who deployed this morning.
"I think it's important to let them know that it doesn't matter what time of day and like we're there for them, just as they are there for us," Prater says.
First on USS Forrest Sherman's trip is a stop at Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown to load up on ammunition before heading to another part of the world where duty calls.
USS Forrest Sherman is named after Adm. Forrest Percival Sherman, who was awarded the Purple Heart.
