Carr seizes $15.6 mil worth of cocaine

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Norfolk-based Navy ship has seized more than $15 million worth of cocaine in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The Navy says the guided-missile frigate USS Carr recovered more than 1,700 pounds of cocaine on Thursday.

The Navy says a helicopter on patrol spotted a fast-moving speedboat that attempted to change course and escape after it went closer to investigate. The helicopter fired warning shots across the boat's bow, but that failed to stop it. The gunner then fired disabling shots and brought the boat to a stop.

The Carr is deployed in support of Operation Martillo, a multi-nation effort to target drug trafficking routes in coastal waters along the Central American isthmus.

Since June, the Carr has seized about 3,900 pounds of cocaine and more than 4,100 pounds of marijuana.
