NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - USS Arleigh Burke deployed from Naval Station Norfolk Monday to conduct counter-piracy operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
The destroyer returned from her last deployment on October 21, 2009, Navy officials said.
Most recently, she returned to Norfolk on Nov. 9, 2011 following Joint Warrior 11-2, a series of training exercises in Scotland and Mayport, Fla.
The ship, led by Cmdr. Corey Keniston, is the namesake for the first class of destroyers in the world equipped with the AEGIS Weapons System and the first U.S. Navy ship designed to incorporate shaping techniques to reduce radar detectability and the likelihood of being targeted.
Navy officials said the ship excels in high-threat areas, anti-air, anti-submarine, anti-surface, and strike operations.
Arleigh Burke was commissioned on July 4, 1991.
