Fire on board Coast Guard Cutter Bear

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth fire crews were dispatched to a small fire aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Bear Thursday afternoon, while it was moored at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth.

Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert with the Coast Guard told WAVY.com the fire was reported just before noon and extinguished less than an hour later.

The fire was contained to the Damage Control shop section of the cutter.

Petty Officer Brandyn Hill with the Coast Guard told WAVY.com crew members from the Coast Guard Cutter Forward assisted, as well as crews from Base Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Fire Department.

"I was on the pier when the fire started and personally observed the rapid response of Portsmouth emergency services," executive officer of Base Portsmouth Cmdr. James "Brett" Millican said. "I appreciate their professionalism and support for the Coast Guard."

There are no reports of injuries. The cause remains under investigation.

The Coast Guard Cutter Bear is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth.
