VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - At Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, Skip Krepcick is remembering a good friend.
"If you didn't know Dave Laconte, you missed out," said Krepcick.
Krepcick met David Laconte after he went back to school for air conditioning, then opened his own HVAC Company, A-Aircare Incorporated in Virginia Beach.
It was his second career.
His first was serving our country as a Navy SEAL. He proudly served 23 years and retired in 1993 as a Senior Chief.
"He loved his country he loved his neighbors he loved his family all of that was entwined in his patriotism it was more than love of country it was just love of people," said Krepcick.
The SEAL community is mourning.
"I'm sure those same qualities that made David successful as a Navy SEAL also served him well throughout his lifetime and his career after the navy," said LTjg Arlo Abrahamson, Public Affairs Officer for Naval Special Warfare Group TWO.
In 2003 Laconte went to Afghanistan to support the war on terrorism as an independent contractor. He was killed this past Friday by a roadside bomb.
LaConte's family told Ten on Your Side he loved what he did and believed in it 100%
Their family photos match Krepcick's memories perfectly.
"He loves motorcycles so do I, he was an outdoor guy so was I. He was a family man loved, very proud of his children," said Krepcick.
His daughter and wife wear a Navy SEAL Trident symbolizing the three areas Navy SEALS excel; sea, air and land.
A perfect representation of David LaConte's abilities.
"If you knew the man it was just hard to believe that anything could happen to him because he was just all man," said Krepcick.
A US soldier from Maryland also died in the attack.
Laconte's viewing will be this Friday at Graham Funeral Home on Kempsville Road in Chesapeake from 6-8PM.
His funeral will be Saturday at First Baptist Church of Norfolk on Kempsville Road at 11AM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation , P.O. Box 5965, Virginia Beach, VA, 23471.
