Navy ID's ships first affected by cuts

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - 10 On Your Side has learned more details on the specific ships and carrier air wings that will be affected by the Sequester.

Weeks ago, even before the deadline for sequestration passed, locally-based carriers USS Truman and USS Lincoln had their schedules delayed.

Saturday evening's announcement from the Navy identified several other delays of ships, including hospital ship USNS Comfort's April deployment.

The search and salvage vessel, USS Grasp based at Little Creek-Fort Story was supposed to deploy to the U.S. European Command in April will not be deploying. The April 15 deployment of Norfolk-based frigate USS Kauffman has been canceled as well. Four carrier air wings will be grounded, starting next month.

"It would take us a year to get them back up at two or three times the cost," Secretary of the Navy Roy Mabus said.

"I'm also concerned, as we all are, about the impact on our readiness that these cuts will have across our force," Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said.

In addition to the four carrier air wings being grounded, two more are being limited to training on what is known as the "hard deck," meaning they will be flying the absolute minimum number of flight hours for pilots to maintain proficiency and qualifications
