The details surrounding Maersk Alabama Capt. Richard Phillips' visit to Norfolk next month are taking shape.
It was announced earlier this month that Phillips, who was held hostage by Somali pirates, then rescued by Navy Seals after his commercial ship was hijacked, will serve as marshal of Norfolk's Grand Illumination Parade on November 21st.
Monday it was announced that Phillips will show his appreciation to the commanding officer and crew of his rescue ship - the Norfolk-based USS Bainbridge - during a ceremony in Norfolk on November 19th.
The guided missile destroyer Bainbridge will be moored on the downtown Norfolk waterfront to participate in the event.
Phillips will also attend a preview of an upcoming National Geographic exhibit on pirates at Nauticus that will feature the lifeboat that Phillips inhabited with his Somali captors until Navy Seal snipers on board the Bainbridge killed the pirates.
Nauticus will also present Phillips with its inaugural National Maritime Valor Award.
