DUBLIN, Va. - Residents of southwest Virginia will soon have a cemetery dedicated exclusively to veterans and their family members.

Crews broke ground Monday on The Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin.

When it's complete, the cemetery will have space for at least an estimated 60,000 deceased veterans and their family members.

There also will be space for cremated remains, a committal shelter for services, roads, walkways and gardens.

The federal government agreed to pay $7.2 million for the project's first phase. The cemetery is scheduled to open by the end of next year with 5,000 burial spaces, which is enough room to meet estimated demand for 10 to 15 years.

The Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery will be Virgina's third state-operated veterans cemetery.

The Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery is in Suffolk. The third is located in Amelia.
