MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT - A Navy draft study calls for 13 Marine Corps squadrons of the new F-35B jet fighter to be based at air stations in the Carolinas.
The Sun Journal of New Bern reported on Wednesday that the Navy's draft environmental statement suggests basing options for 11 operational squadrons and two fleet replacement squadrons. The final report is expected in November.
The report said the Navy's preferred option puts eight operational squadrons at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, three operational squadrons at South Carolina's Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and two fleet replacement squadrons in Beaufort.
The F-35B is supposed to replace the Marine Corps' AV-8B Harriers, EA-6B Prowlers and F/A-18 Hornet jets.
