Local DJs hold fundraiser for SEALs

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Local disc jockeys with Entercom Communications stopped spinning tunes on Monday to scratch up support for the families of the service members killed in a helicopter crash August 6.

"These are real people just like the rest of us," said Don London with 2WD. "They've given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom."

30 U.S. service members were killed in the attack in Afghanistan. 22 of them were Navy SEALs based in Virginia Beach.

"I think that especially with [the] SEALs and especially with SEAL Team 6, we in Hampton Roads think that's our home team," added Nick Taylor with Z104. "So, when something affects the home team, I think everybody rallies around that."

To do their part the DJs set up shop in front of Haynes Furniture on Virginia Beach Boulevard.

"All of the sudden I heard the news," said Gina Bradshaw of Virginia Beach. "It was heart wrenching. I had tears automatically."

At Monday's charity event cash and school supplies were collected for the families who's worlds have been turned upside down.

"I think most importantly, it lets them know that we are thinking about them," said London. "We haven't forgotten them. We are all pulling for them."

Event organizers hoped to make a difference for the families left behind, because their loved ones did so much to make a difference while they were here.

"We are doing good," Taylor added. "We can be doing better."

The radio group will be back out in front of Haynes Tuesday raising money for the Navy SEAL Foundation.
