NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A fire broke out aboard the USS Whidbey Island on Tuesday morning, according to the Surflant Public Affairs Office .
The ship was at JEB Little Creek when the fire began around 4:00 a.m. Officials initially said the blaze was not completely extinguished until after 8:00 a.m., but later released a statement saying the fire was put out in 90 minutes.
According to the public affairs office, the fire appeared to be confined to the deck department spaces. It was spotted and responded to by the duty section onboard.
The USS Oak Hill, which was berthed next to the Whidbey Island, sent over a fire team to assist, but the Navy says there is no report that they actually helped fight the fire.
No injuries were reported. An investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.
