Commander derelict during collision

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - According to findings released Thursday by the U.S. Navy, a commander of the USS Porter was derelict during the ship's collision with a tanker last year.
Commander Martin Arriola was found in violation of two articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice; Dereliction of Duty and Hazarding a Vessel.
The dereliction article means that Arriola failed to obey orders or regulations, the result of which caused a collision that left a 20-foot by 30-foot hole in the Porter.
Arriola was relieved of his duties Aug. 30, 2012 and according to a news release from the Navy, received a letter of reprimand for his actions during the incident.
He has been reassigned to Naval Surface Force, Atlantic.
