RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia's two U.S. senators are calling on the Navy to maintain its existing shipyards before spending on moving a Norfolk-based nuclear powered aircraft carrier to Florida.

Sens. Mark Warner and Jim Webb cited a new report Friday in calling on the shift in priorities. They say the Government Accountability Office report found a multibillion dollar backlog of restoration and modernization needs at the nation's four naval shipyards.

The Virginia Democrats contend that's a compelling reason for the Defense Department to maintain its existing shipyards before investing $1 billion to make the Mayport, Fla., station carrier-ready.

Naval Station Norfolk is the homeport for the Navy's East Coast carrier fleet. State officials are fighting a proposal to move a carrier to Mayport.
