ABOARD THE USS NASSAU - Sailors aboard the Norfolk-based multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Nassau (LHA 4) helped reunite a Haitian mother with her newborn baby girl on Sunday.

According to the Navy, in the aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti on Jan. 12, the baby was found in a box in Haiti on Jan. 23 and brought aboard Nassau for medical treatment.

The mother, Marlene Gaby, delivered around the time as the earthquae by emergency c-section at a hospital in Haiti.  She ended up on the Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort, and quickly alerted personnel that she was desperately seeking her newborn child.

Both the USS Nassau and USNS Comfort are currently off the Haitian coast, providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

The mother's description of the baby fit the infant girl on the Nassau.

When Nassau sailors found out about Gaby, they contacted her and arranged for her to come to the ship.

The mother and baby were reunited on board the Nassau on Jan. 31st.
