USS Enterprise returns from final deployment

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A historic homecoming took place at Naval Station Norfolk Sunday morning as the USS Enterprise marked its 25th and final return to port.

The homecoming was the aircraft carrier's last after 51 years of service. The Enterprise is the Navy's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and is scheduled to be inactivated during a ceremony in December.

Three locally-based fighter jet squadrons from USS Enterprise returned to Virginia Beach Saturday.

Aboard the "Big E" were two original crew members, or "plank owners."

"51 years ago I was 22 years old and never dreamed I'd be here bringing her home for the last time," 74-year-old Bill Falls said.

Kevin Simmons and Isaiah Dunson are a father-son duo both coming home on the Enterprise.

"It was his first deployment. It was my eight deployment so it's good that he got to experience the first one with me," Dunson said.
