YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) - Personnel from Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown hosted approximately 40 participants and support crew of the 'Sea to Shining Sea' cross-country bicycle ride on Friday.
The group, mostly comprised of military veterans, is pedaling cross-country to raise public awareness for troops disabled from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The riders left San Francisco on May 22nd. They plan on ending their journey Saturday around 4:00 p.m. at Neptune Park on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
The ride was organized by World T.E.A.M. Sports, a nonprofit organization committed to bringing together athletes of all cultures, with and without disabilities.
Participants include former U.S. Administrator to Iraq Paul "Jerry" Bremer, Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling and Marine Corps Gen. Robert Magnus.
The 'Sea to Shining Sea' route has taken them through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia.
