Deputy pitches for promotion from Afgh.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A Virginia Beach Deputy Sheriff sat through a job promotion interview Thursday despite being deployed by the Navy halfway around the globe in Afghanistan.

Sheriff officials say Todd C. Moissett is one of four Virginia Beach deputies currently serving their country in a dual capacity - as deputies with the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office and as soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Deputy Moissett became a full-time deputy in 2004, while remaining in a reserve capacity with the U.S. Navy.

He was called to active duty by the Navy in September and is currently serving in Afghanistan.

While deployed however, Deputy Moissett competed for promotion to Master Deputy by taking the written test over the Internet.

Thursday he participated in a long distance interview via video-conferencing with the promotion panel at the Sheriff's Office in Virginia Beach. The interview spanned over 7000 miles and a nine hour time difference.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office says it's extremely proud of all four of its deputies who are serving their country, they're excited that Deputy Moissett's deployment did not prevent him from competing for this promotion.

While there are no current Master Deputy openings available - the promotional process is for future openings - Moissett will know if he made the promotion list next week.
