AIRLANT names its Sailors of the Year

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic announced its 2010 selections for Sea and Shore Sailor of the Year in a ceremony Friday at Naval Station Norfolk's Vista Point Club.

The Naval Air Force Atlantic Sea Sailor of the Year is Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (SW/AW) John McGilvery from Dallas Texas, stationed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Norfolk.

The Naval Air Force Atlantic Shore Sailor of the Year is Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class (AW/SW) Jason Pitts from Camp Hill, Ala., stationed at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.

Ten sailors were candidates for the honors, which recognize those who best exemplify the Navy's core values of honor, courage, and commitment. The selectees in each category will advance to U.S. Fleet Forces Command where they will compete for Fleet Sailor of the Year honors.

Other AIRLANT Sailor of the Year candidates included:

- Aviation Maintenance Administrationman 1st Class (AW/SW) William Coney III from New Orleans, assigned to Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic Detachment, Beaufort S.C.

- Yeoman 1st Class (AW/SW) Yvonne Hardie from Floresville, Texas, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic, Norfolk

- Navy Counselor 1st Class (AW/SW) Sara Reynolds from Longview Texas, USS Enterprise (CVN 65), Norfolk

- Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class (AW/SW) Leron Robinson from Jennings Mo., USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Norfolk

- Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class (AW/SW) Jerome Samuel from Jacksonville, Fla., Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HSL) 40, Jacksonville, Fla.

- Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class (NAC/AW) William Smith from Grantville Ga., Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 28, Norfolk

- Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class (NAC/AW) Douglas Swift from Chesapeake, Airborne Mine Countermeasures Weapons Systems Training School, Norfolk

- Aviation Maintenance Administrationman 1st Class (AW) Arlene Williams from Moncks Corner, S.C., Patrol Squadron (VP) 5, Jacksonville, Fla.
