PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - What can an employee do to prepare for evaluation time?

· Make a list of your accomplishments from the prior year.
· Think about topics you'd like to discuss with your manager.
· Think about your future goals.
· Prepare to discuss any resources you need to perform job more efficiently (training, equipment, etc).

What tips can you give employees that are nervous about the evaluation meeting?

· Have a notepad handy.
· Listen carefully without interrupting, jotting down questions as they arise in your mind.
· Ask for clarification if needed.
· Think of the meeting as a constructive communication tool to improve job efficiency AND an avenue for employees to communicate their own career goals.
· If you discuss agree with something, speak up. If you need time to prepare yourself, ask for a follow up meeting to discuss after you've formulated your thoughts.

What do you suggest employees do after the evaluation meeting?

The same thing you should do after any meeting:
· Document what was discussed.
· Create an action plan and set a follow-up date if needed.
