VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Fireworks are a trademark of Independence Day here in Hampton Roads, but few know that setting off your own could have you arrested.

Virginia Beach Public Safety Agencies says all fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in the City of Virginia Beach. Illegal fireworks are a Class 1 misdemeanor and are punishable by up to a one-year jail sentence or a $2,500 fine.

Aside from the risk of being arrested, fireworks also pose a safety concern. As stated in the US Fire Administration's 2011 US Fireworks Injury Report, there were 9,600 firework related injuries in 2011. Of those injuries, 26 percent were children under the age of 15.

The Fire Marshal's Office and the Virginia Beach Police Department encourages citizens to call 757-385-5000 to report illegal fireworks within their neighborhoods.

Citizens can enjoy free firework shows at the July 4th Celebration at Mt Trashmore and the Stars & Stripes Explosion at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Fourth of July fireworks at the Ocean front will be launched from a barge off 20th Street and will begin at 9:30 p. m.  Free Parking will be provided at the Virginia Beach Convention Center parking lot on 19th Street.
