Radio station collects Toys for Tots

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Every kid deserves to wake up and find presents under the tree on Christmas morning, and without your help, it’s not possible.

Deejays from local radio station Z104 and the Salvation Army collected presents for their annual Toys for Tots program Sunday. Z104 deejay Shaggy lives on a bus for several days, driving around Hampton Roads to collect donations.

Once the buses are full, the toys will be given to local families who really need them.

“I actually was privileged enough to go to the Toys for Tots headquarters and see these families, without the radio being there, come in and shop for their kids,” Shaggy told WAVY.com. “These are people you walk like with every day. These are no one-dimensional people, and to see them walking in there and knowing with the community coming together they don’t have to worry about their 9-year-old kid not getting Christmas. To me, I don’t need [a] reward or pat on the back, I just know that this works.”

Shaggy says his own two children inspire him to give back.

The event is celebrating its seventh year, but this is the first time they started collections on Thanksgiving weekend.
