Holiday travel tips on Thanksgiving Eve

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - AAA expects Wednesday to be the busiest travel day over the Thanksgiving holiday with 43 million people traveling in one way or another.

The travel organization says most people will be hitting the road rather than flying this year.  There's good news for drivers, gas prices have gone down in the last month and a half.  The average price of gas in Virginia is $3.26.  On a national level, gas is averaging around $3.40.

AAA says air travel has gone down a little bit from last year.  Those who are traveling may notice airfares are lower.

WAVY.com had a crew at Norfolk International Airport early Wednesday morning.  There were some long lines, but travelers were making it through the check out areas in a timely fashion.

If you are flying on Wednesday, you can check out ORF's arriving flights here and the departing flights here.

Here's some travel tips from the Transportation Security Administration's blog :

  • Place liquids in a zip top bag ahead of time.  Liquid make up, perfume, and lotion all need to be in that clear, plastic bag.
  • You can bring food through the security check, like cake, breads, and even a Thanksgiving turkey.  However, any liquid food, like, cranberry sauce, jams, and sauces need to be in your checked baggage.
  • TSA says gel inserts for shoes are now allowed through the security checks.
  • Electric razors are allowed, but straight razors are not.
  • To reduce the chance you'll need a pat down, take everything out of your pockets before the screening.  Put heavy jewelry on after you go through security.
