Local groundhog predicts early spring

VLM hosts Groundhog Day celebration

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - It's official. Not only did the world's most famous groundhog, Punxsatawney Phil, predict an early Spring, but so did the groundhog at the Virginia Living Museum (VLM) Wednesday afternoon.

This year, for the first time ever, The Virginia Living Museum (VLM) hosted its own Groundhog Day festivities on the Peninsula. That's right. And Super Doppler 10 Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler was the event's Official Prognosticator.

Festivities included treats, crafts, children's activities, face painting with Kolonial Klowns, planetarium programs and more.

As for Phil, since 1887 he has seen his shadow 98 times and hasn't seen it just 16 times. According to the Associated Press, the celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.
