Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween trick-or-treating is just plain fun. But, like anything else, without a little common sense, it can turn into something far worse.

Since it never hurts to be reminded, below are simple safety tips to make sure you and your child enjoy a festive Halloween.

Don't let children trick-or-treat alone. Based on age and maturity, they should walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters.

Carry a flashlight to help you see, and help others see you.

Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Otherwise, stay outside.

Never walk near lit candles or jack-o-lanterns. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook well.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

If your home will be open to trick-or-treaters, be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls. Also, keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, and keep them out of the reach of pets and small children. Never leave them unattended.
