Dine and Dish: Steinhilbers

Since 1939

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Steinhilber's
653 Thalia Road
Virginia Beach, VA 23452
(757) 340-1156

First impressions:
This is a family run restaurant and it shows. It's intimate and familiar -- more like a large dinner party than a restaurant.
Decades of satisfied diners lay hidden in every creak of the floor and every old picture on the wall. On the way over, I thought I made a wrong turn. It's a winding route through a neighborhood, but the road finally gives way to a nice view of the water.

Atmosphere:
A bit austere, but that's to be expected for a place that's been fine dining since 1939.

Your best bet:
The world famous fried shrimp. It more than lives up to the hype and is worth the considerable price. ( $18 for a half dozen, $35.95 for a dozen)
They say Charleston, South Carolina is the fried seafood king. Steiny's shrimp beats anything I've ever had in Charleston, hands down.

Really special deals:
Don't forget the steak. Its not cheap, but its all prime.
( Boneless New York Strip $36.95)
Executive Chef Bobby Huber says its the best steak program in town.
Prime Rib every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

When you're thirsty:
Plenty of beers and an extensive wine list.

You need to know . . .
Steinhilber's was a country club in the 1920's and an officers club during World War II.

Open 5 pm to 10 pm seven days a week.
Reservations available.
Plenty of Parking.
