HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Research shows drivers who text are six times more likely to cause an accident, than an intoxicated driver.

WAVY TV 10 and other local businesses are teaming up to encourage young drivers to buckle up and put the phone down.

"Today, we are here to talk about distracted driving," Miss Virginia said to an assembly of students at Ocean Lakes High School.

The students were asked to take the W82TXT pledge.

"We are asking teens to pledge not to use cell phones or text while they are driving. We ask them to stop eating behind the wheel. And we ask them to focus on driving and not their passengers," Geico's Joe Thomas said.

High schools across Hampton Roads are competing to get as many students as they can to take the pledge. The winning school will celebrate with a big tailgate party.
