This honoree is a shining example of what Ken Cohen is talking about. Less than a year ago he arrived in the United States from his home country of Bhutan where he and his family suffered through a horrible period of ethnic cleansing. Due to the English he learned in a refugee camp, he was able to quickly assimilate and secure a job. Numerous elderly Bhutanese folks have resettled here in Newport News in the past year and this honoree has taken it upon himself to organize a class and teach them all English. After working all day, he comes to a small apartment and begins to teach -- some in the kitchen, some at the coffee table, depending on their skill levels. The class meets six days a week for two hours. Motivated by nothing more than these people new to this country to have a better life.
