"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." -- Leo Buscaglia
We won't underestimate these things as we learn more about our next honoree. As a former school resource officer, he has touched many students' lives. It's not unusual for him to open his mail box and find a card or letter from a former student - thanking him for making a difference in his or her life. It's not unusual to find him on the phone reassuring a former student that dreams are worth following. It's not unusual to see him slide a personal check to a former student for college tuition. It's also not unusual to see him passing out food to the homeless or a bottle of cold water to folks waiting at a busstop on a hot summer day. And it's not unusual to see him volunteering to help those with diabilities - even purchasing wheelchairs for those who can't afford them. I'm sure by now you have realized that there is nothing usual about Shawn Aitken. That's what makes him one of WAVY-TV'S 10 Who Care.
