NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - “WE MAKE A LIVING BY WHAT WE DO, BUT WE MAKE A LIFE BY WHAT WE GIVE.” --WINSTON CHURCHILL
This honoree is an account by trade and as so, has spent countless hours providing free income tax preparation. He started a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program at his church and worked with the City of Norfolk and the IRS to create the South Hampton Roads Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition to promote and provide free income tax preparation and financial literacy through initiatives like Project Homeless Connect.
Once struggling with depression and his own physical limitations, this honoree has overcome both through his volunteer efforts. As a longtime volunteer with his church, he discovered that helping others could get his life on track. And he now rides a bike in charity rides to raise funds for those who are struggling with their own limitations, ignoring his own difficulty with walking.
Over at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia this honoree has become a standout in the fight against hunger. He’s worked countless food drives for many years and was instrumental in the implementation of the Foodbank’s Team Leader program. He is there every week leading volunteers in the sorting and prepping of food for distribution.
Making a life through what he gives… Our Partners On Your Side and WAVY-TV honor JEFFREY LEWIS as one of our 10 WHO CARE.
