Don Slater

Meteorologist Don Slater is the dean of Hampton Roads weathercasters, anchoring newscasts at 5:00pm, 5:30pm, 6:00pm and 11:00pm. He can also be seen on Hampton Roads Local Weather Station (distributed through area cable providers).

Don has more experience with Hampton Roads weather than any other forecaster. He joined WAVY-TV in 1981 as the station's main weatherperson. Prior to that, Don was a weathercaster for the Nebraska Television Network. He also worked at KIHI-TV in Fargo, North Dakota.

Don's 20 years of forecasting the weather in Hampton Roads is double the local experience of any other area meteorologist.

Don was instrumental in the introduction of WAVY-TV's exclusive "WeatherNet" system. A network of weather data collection sites at area high schools, the "WeatherNet" system allows WAVY forecasters to see 'real time' weather data from various locations throughout the area. In addition, students may access the network to study the weather conditions in nearby neighborhoods, analyze historical weather data, even track hurricanes.

Don attended Moorehead State University and Kearney State. He's also attended Mississippi State, the University of Oregon, and Old Dominion University. He and his family reside in Norfolk.
