Nicole Livas

Nicole Livas was once an intern at WAVY-TV and is now the co-anchor of WAVY News 10 at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. and Fox43 News at 10 p.m.

She graduated from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach and George Mason University in Fairfax. Prior to coming home to Hampton Roads, she worked as an anchor/reporter at WJAR-TV in Providence, R.I., WKBN-TV in Youngstown, Ohio, and WTOV-TV in Steubenville, Ohio.

Nicole attends professional journalism workshops and conferences annually and is working hard to keep up to date with the changes in the business.  You will see Nicole during breaking news sharing pictures on the set computer from "reportit@wavy.com" and posting Twitter and Facebook updates to interact with viewers during the newscasts. Nicole has covered several major stories during her career. She reported live from Virginia Tech, one year after the campus shootings.  Nicole also reported live from the World Trade Center site in New York City, one year after the terror attacks. She was one of the first reporters at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis, Mass., following the JFK, Jr. plane crash.  Nicole also covered the EgyptAir Flight 990 crash off of Nantucket, Mass., and the USAir Flight 427 plane crash in Pittsburgh.

Nicole has had the opportunity to cover some great entertainment stories including the auditions for American Idol in New York City for Season 2,  and she reported live from the Hollywood finale of American Idol for Season 5.    Nicole also produced several stories during the filming of the TV show Providence in Providence and Los Angeles.

She loves to go up in Chopper 10 to cover "Friday Night Flights" during high school football season and report live from area festivals.

Nicole comes from a family of local educators and pioneers. She's often asked if her mother is  Becky Livas, the first African-American female TV newscaster in Hampton Roads. The answer is yes. She retired as a Suffolk school teacher and devotes a lot of her time to her passion of singing. Nicole's father Henry is a retired engineer from NASA - Langley. He now serves on the Virginia Beach Planning Commission. One grandfather taught architecture at Hampton University and founded a firm that still exists in Norfolk.  Her other grandfather taught high school Physics and was the first African-American City Councilman in Virginia Beach. Both grandmothers were teachers. Nicole has a sister and two brothers. Nicole is a proud aunt and godmother.

Nicole spends much of her free time in the gym or yoga studio, with family and friends, and performing community work.   S he serves on the advisory board of the College of Humanities and Science for her alma mater, George Mason University. She also serves as a board member for the Society of Professional Journalists, Virginia Chapter.She has served as a volunteer and mentor with several organizations including The Up Center, Teens With A Purpose,  Big Brothers Big Sisters, Norfolk NATOFest,  The United Way of South Hampton Roads, The American Heart Association, Special Olympics,  ACCESS Aids Care,  Dress For Success, and the Boys Choir of Hampton Roads.

Nicole's hard work and dedication to the community have not gone unnoticed. The YWCA of South Hampton Roads named her one of its 2012 "Women of Distinction",  George Mason University awarded her the 2012 Alumni of the Year for Communication, the university also featured Nicole in a regional magazine ad recruitment campaign in 2008.  She's been voted Best Female TV News Anchor in Hampton Roads Magazine's poll several times since 2008.

One of Nicole's most humbling accomplishments was in March of 2012 when she embarked on a medical and faith mission trip to Haiti. She assisted medical professionals at an orphanage in Ouanaminthe where they treated not only the adorable children, but members of the surrounding community who lack sufficient healthcare and education.

Nicole loves to support local restaurants and do some cooking at home.  She enjoys fresh local seafood, fruits and vegetables and is a true bargain hunter!  If you see her in the store,  she'll probably have her coupon wallet with her.
